3D Printing - Vocabulary

Like all the technologies, 3D print is not an exception and it has some "lingo", its own set of words to describe specifically something or some operations.

This post will be updated often.

Let see some of them to better understand this business.

Slicer

A slicer is a software that convert a graphic design (typically in a file type .stl) into a set of commands ready to feed a 3D Printer.
The format converted is called G-code.

G-Code

The G-Code is a protocol used to control machines (numerical control).
Basically is a set of instructions capable to move on 3 axis a tool and then control it, and is of course adopted for the 3D printing.

CAD

Computer-Aided Design.
Is a software designed to help to design an object.
For the 3D printing there are specialized CAD.

Smoother

A smoother is a circuit (usually a bunch of diodes) to be installed on the axis in order to have a more "smooth" movement, capable to reduce the "skin effect" on a print.

Stringing

The final effect on a 3D piece printed where are present some "small strings" of plastic.
