Evaluating a device

I love to go to antique mall and flea market and look to find pieces of technology to play with.

In one of my tour I did find in very good conditions an Anviz FacePass Pro 7, a clock-in face recognition device for few $.

Let discover what it is, if is working and how I could use it !

The device is used as entry control/time stamp in companies or anyway to easily allow an access a place.

As said, it is in great aesthetic conditions.

Without consulting any documentation I was able to set it up locally, who owned it before did the decent thing to factory reset the unit, so I was able to set up for my network and see it running.

I was able also to access to the device internal web server, that basically duplicate the local admin screen access menu.

According with some info found online, it would be possible to use the device even without have it access the external application control, called CrossChex, unfortunately a Windows program.
The company is not supporting Linux or MacOs.

Problems

I did find basically two problems on this unit :

  1. there is not the User menu on the device.
According to some information gathered, it should be possible to locally add/subscribe a user directly on the device (or using the internal website) but the User menu simply is not there.
  2. The CrossChex Windows program, capable to connect with the device, isn't running on Wine, it crash.

Basic info

The unit I have is an Anviz FacePass 7 Pro.
It is based on embedded Linux, the model DOESN'T HAVE the temperature sensor (I hoped that :) )
  • Firmware version : 03.76.CX-M-ARF-MI
  • Kernel version : g26a54c36_W04
The unit has the port 22 closed, so is not possible to log in via CLI.
It has the port 80 open, to allow the access to the internal website.

It has an inside relay to open a door and it seems working, I was able to trigger it and I can hear clicking.

More search are need to see how to really be able to use it.
Something for when I'll have more spare time.

Stay tuned ...
